Every user interaction is filtered through dozens of cognitive biases, from anchoring effects that make the first price they see disproportionately influential, to confirmation bias that makes them seek evidence supporting their existing beliefs. Designers who understand these patterns can structure information and choices to support better decisions. Ignoring biases means building for a rational user who does not exist, leading to interfaces that work in theory but fail in practice.
SaaS pricing pages commonly place the most expensive plan first or highlight a 'recommended' middle tier. The high-anchor plan makes the middle option feel reasonable by comparison, even if it is objectively expensive. This anchoring technique has been shown to increase average revenue per user by 10-20% compared to presenting plans from cheapest to most expensive.
Amazon displays review counts, star ratings, and 'Amazon's Choice' badges to leverage social proof bias. Users disproportionately trust products with thousands of reviews, even when smaller-volume products might have genuinely higher quality. When designing for expert users who need unfiltered data to make professional judgments — such as researchers, analysts, or clinicians — presenting information in bias-counteracting ways can actually impede their work. Experts have trained themselves to account for biases and need raw, unframed data to apply their professional judgment.
